CAMPECHE: Project Development, Sustainability, Culture and Communities

We’re looking for open-minded, inquisitive and motivated thinkers to work with the team at the Ninth Wave Global base in Campeche, Mexico.

With a split focus between the planning and implementation of long-term international programmes and exploratory journeys (in areas such as the Arctic and Antarctic, the Peruvian Amazon, the USA and Europe) and the facilitation of local projects, cultural events, sustainable living and organic farming initiatives and engagement both in rural Mayan communities and in the city, this programme can provide a broad-ranging learning experience towards a career path in development. Working as part of a small team, you’ll be fully embedded within the project and community and able to gain experience of all aspects of the day-to-day running and development of an international not-for-profit organisation.

Examples of projects you could be working on include:

— Interdisciplinary canoe journeys on the nearby Usumacinta river

— Organising, promoting and delivering music and cinema nights at a cultural centre in the city

— Working on educational exchanges focused on sustainable farming, cooking and living

— Assisting with a ‘Huerto Urbano’ urban farming co-operative

— Working on a weekly ‘Mercado Verde’ project in collaboration with local artisanal producers

— Facilitating drop-in clinics and wilderness medicine workshops with remote Mayan communities

— Identification of and application for funding opportunities

— Liaising with international, interdisciplinary expeditionaries and organisations for the development of new environmental, social and community projects all over the world.

This programme includes:

— Accommodation in a shared space with other international volunteers and staff

— One meal per day, five days per week

— Transport to communities, on regular excursions and, wherever relevant, guides and language support to achieve the full potential of these activities

— Two Spanish lessons per week

Time frames are flexible but we ask that volunteers are able to commit for at least 4 weeks. Most of our staff begin their time with us as volunteers -- there is potential for the role to develop into a permanent staff position.
