Volunteer in Vietnam: Teaching English and hospitality skills to disadvantaged youth
- Volunteer Opportunity posted by CADIP
Short-Term (few weeks/months)
2 to 12 months volunteering in a Center for Disabled People in the city of Ha Long.
All the people residing at the center have a permanent disability that impedes their ability to have a normal life, which in turn hinders their chances to make adequate earnings to cover their basic needs. Their children, all of whom are badly malnourished and illiterate, also have to live in poverty. In addition to disability and poverty, the people at the Disabled Center also experience social issues such as lack of education about environmental issues and sustainability. Currently, the people at the Center create and sell handicrafts to make a living; take advantage of forestry and agriculture on their land; and repair the extensive damage to their accommodation and classrooms following the devastating typhoons of 2012 and 2013.
The volunteers will spend time at the restaurant as well as in the training centre to observe and teach trainees how to interact with customers in English, and will help them to improve their skills in hospitality management.
Special requirements: The volunteer should be enthusiastic, optimistic, and ready to deal with differences. They need to adapt quickly with new environment both in nature and lifestyle. Volunteers are expected to have management skills.
Leisure activities: Volunteers have to opportunity to go on weekend trips to discover one of the world’s most beautiful world heritage sites, Ha Long Bay, recently named one of the 7 new wonders of the world. Volunteers who join this project will be a meager 5 km away from this paradise.
Duration of the project: 2-12 months
