Writopia Lab Write to Recognition Volunteer Opportunity

Do you love working with kids?  Writopia Lab, an award-winning 501(c)3 non-profit that runs the country's best creative writing workshops for kids, is actively seeking volunteer mentors for its Write to Recognition Program.

What Is Write to Recognition?

This program provides 50 NYC kids (“writers”) from lower literacy and low income backgrounds with weekly after school creative writing workshops and one-on-one grammar and critical thinking private sessions throughout the school year. Write to Recognition empowers kids as thinkers, writers, and leaders, and helps them develop into strong candidates for college admissions.

As a Write to Recognition volunteer mentor, you will be paired with a mentee writer and will work one-on-one to improve his or her grammar and mechanics through individualized, revision-based lessons. Each week during a private session, mentors read the piece their writer is working on and identify a skill the writer needs to improve. Every writer has a different level of literacy and different technical aspects they need most help with.

Requirements:

Our volunteers are highly literate people from different backgrounds who have a love for the written word, a passion for being supportive and enthusiastic about young writers’ work, and a dedication to nurturing kids from diverse, sometimes challenging backgrounds.

Those with experience in Regents and standardized test prep, high school equivalency tests, resume building, and admissions essays would have relevant skills to be mentors working with our eldest teens who are transitioning out of foster care or treatment facilities for incarcerated youth.

When:

This mentorship is a nine-month commitment and is a volunteer opportunity, meaning it is unpaid.

Sessions start in November 2019 and end in late May to early June 2020. We require all volunteers to commit to 1 to 3 hours per week (1 hour per mentee you are matched with) throughout the school year and to participate in an initial 2-hour training session as well as monthly check-in meetings. Your mentorship hours may change in the winter or spring depending on your class or work schedule.

How to Apply:

If you are excited by the idea of joining a community of writers and helping children and teens learn to write, please fill out the short form here. Don’t forget to attach your resume and cover letter, and to answer the required questions!  No calls, emails or drop-ins.

Applications due by November 11, 2019.
