Description

The Prevention Corps mission is to provide proactive community education to prevent and decrease opioid and prescription drug abuse, and to seek out innovative efforts to combat the opioid crisis.


Where: Members serve with nonprofits (health departments, schools, local prevention councils, etc.) in the Greater New Haven, Greater Bridgeport, and Greater Danbury regions.


AmeriCorps Member Responsibilities:

Complete a 10-month commitment to the following projects:

  • Assist with the coordination of evidence-based screening practice SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention/Brief Treatment, Referral to Treatment) for community health practitioners
  • Assist in coordinating Nalaxone (Narcan) trainings
  • Assist with the coordination of drug prevention education sessions for community members around abuse prevention and proper disposal of medication
  • Develop/expand partnerships with local pharmacies to promote safe medication disposal systems
  • Develop outreach material, social media campaigns, and partnerships to promote awareness of existing services and to combat stigma around the opioid epidemic
  • Organize community forums around opioids and drug addiction/prevention
  • Provide monthly reports on member activities


Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED or higher
  • Mission Driven
  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Highly organized
  • Committed to ongoing learning early intervention and prevention strategies
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with community outreach, public health, counseling a plus
  • Education in psychology, public health, social work, human services, and/or community health a plus
