Be an assistant teacher in Peru
- Volunteer Opportunity posted by La Comunidad que Construimos - LCQC Peru
Times of day
Part time (10-30 hrs/wk)
Short-Term (few weeks/months)
We are looking for positive individuals to come and join our exciting team in Peru!
Being a volunteer at La Comunidad que Construimos is an incredibly rewarding experience and a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children and their families here in Trujillo. You will work with an official NGO, dedicated teachers and educators that have served the community for years. Our volunteer teachers provide children with the necessary tools to build their self-esteem and confidence through our educational programs and workshops in the Alto Trujillo district on a daily basis.
No need to have previous experience in teaching, we are looking for enthusiastic and positive person to help us giving our English lessons and to animate our afterschool program. The level in English is really low (colors, numbers, basic presentation…) so no need to be fluent in English. The important thing is to have a good pronunciation in order to show it right to the children. A good level in Spanish would help. We prepare the lesson together. We are always looking for new games, ideas, sport and artistic activities to do with the children. All these activities and lessons in order to share values, to improve their self confidence, to give them the attention they don’t always receive in their families.
The children are so happy to have our volunteers playing with them!
Benefits of volunteering with us:
- Gain valuable skills and a unique experience in teaching kids in Peru.
- Be part of an amazing community that aims at making a positive change.
- Induction, training and on-going support from our team members.
- Housing at our Volunteer House
- Get a reference and a certificate upon completion of your mission
Your Typical Day
Teaching takes place every morning, Monday - Friday, in Alto Trujillo. You will teach kids aged 6 to 12 years-old in groups of up to 30 children. There are 6 primary levels in total, of 2 classes each. You will assist the local teacher, focusing on sports, games and fun activities with the kids to help them increase their confidence and self-esteem. Our teaching methods are inclusive and interactive: children learn how to achieve their goals, work with others and manage their emotions – through play and mutual trust. All classes take place in the presence of a local primary teacher.

Our After-School Program takes place every day after class. It is free, open to all, and most importantly it provides a safe & structured environment to the schoolchildren. Our "Different but Equal" motto promotes cultural diversity, acceptance and respect for one another’s differences.
Our volunteers create a range of art, craft & sport activities around a new country each week. This cultural exchange program allows children to broaden their vision of the world, to form and express opinions creatively, and to value their own culture by reflecting a positive self-image.
Volunteers live at our Volunteer House located in the center of Trujillo, close to amenities. Accommodation includes shared bedrooms, Wi-Fi, self-catering kitchen, bathroom with hot water, free drinking water, free laundry and a terrace.
As you are not a professional teacher, we provide you a training in order to give you the tools to act we children and feel comfortable. The time of training, integration and testing needs at least 2/3 weeks, so we require a minimum commitment of 4 weeks.
We also work with children who will create real links with you so we don’t want them to feel abandoned and just see volunteers changing everyday.
