Volunteer in Indonesia: Teaching English to primary school students

In the recent years, the primary schools in Indonesia started developing some new programs. The International program is designed to facilitate the students who wish to employ English as their main language of communication in class.

The regular class activities are Monday to Saturday, from 7 am to 1 pm. After 1 pm, the students are given choices to participate in some club activities provided by the school. There are sports, music, art, English club, Mathematics club, computers, boy scouts. The schools are located in the urban setting of some cities such as Semarang, Makassar, Salatiga, etc. The primary school system in Indonesia has 6 grades based on the ability and the age of the students. There are about 20 to 30 students in each class. The students are 6–12 years old.

The role of the volunteer will be assisting local teachers in holding basic English conversation classes. The volunteer is expected to motivate and encourage the students to practice their English skills. In addition, intercultural learning activities such as arts and music will be very much welcomed.

Study theme: The volunteer will be introduced to the Indonesian culture and customs in general, with a special focus on the local particularities. Some cultural visits are also foreseen.

Duration of the project: The volunteer placements are from 1 to 4 months.
