Austin Partners in Education will expand its College Readiness program to serve 100 rising 9th grade students in the summer of 2018. The program will offer personalized academic support to students needing preparation to meet the state mandated academic college readiness standards in Reading and Writing. Students that meet the standards can qualify for a variety of dual-credit education opportunities. Summer Associates will perform a dual role, in both direct service and capacity building. Each VISTA Summer Associate will provide 20 to 30 hours weekly of academic tutoring/mentoring to a group of approximately 10 rising 9th grade students, with a focus on reading and writing instruction aligned with the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Assessment. Reading instruction will primarily focus on building students’ skills in identifying inferences in a text, deciphering an author’s use of language and the main idea of a passage, and correctly analyzing literary devices. Writing instruction will primarily focus on persuasive essay writing, with the aim of improving students’ written communication skills and building their critical thinking through argumentation. Additionally, the VISTA Summer Associates will work outside of the classroom with APIE’s College Readiness Program team to develop and revise College Readiness curriculum/training materials used to prepare underclassmen for the TSI assessment.
Member Duties : The primary purpose of the VISTA Summer Associate position is to prepare students to meet the college readiness standards. VISTAs will also contribute to the development of future program curriculum and training. VISTA Summer Associates will undergo extensive initial (one week) and ongoing training with the College Readiness team to offer students focused, personalized attention and prepare them for the TSI test and the rigor of college coursework. Training will focus on strategies specifically designed to teach students the content and skills necessary to meet college readiness standards and be successful college students. Summer Associate training will include teaching approaches and methodology, facilitating small-group tutoring sessions, using effective classroom management strategies, navigating different types of student behaviors, and adapting lesson plans to accommodate different learning styles.
