Who: A new school year is just around the corner, and HandsOn Suburban Chicago (HOSC) needs YOU to help make sure students get all the support they need to succeed.
What: Lunch Buddies is an in-school tutoring program designed to strengthen the reading and math skills of elementary school kids. Lunch Buddies at Jane Addams Elementary School in Palatine serves students in grades 4, 5, and 6 and covers both reading and math. Lunch Buddies at Plainfield Elementary School in Des Plaines serves students in grades 1 and 2. Tutors at Plainfield will have lunch and read with English language learners to facilitate their literacy development. All volunteers will work with small groups of students (2-3) and under the supervision of program staff and volunteer leaders.
Knowledge of Spanish is desirable but not required. Applicants must be willing to undergo a background check.
Where and When: Lunch Buddies will begin in September and go through mid-December 2016.
Volunteer tutors are needed on:
- Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Jane Addams Elementary School (1020 East Sayles Drive, Palatine, IL 60074)
- Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:10 pm to 1:00 pm at Plainfield Elementary School (1850 Plainfield Drive, Des Plaines, IL 60018)
Choose and commit to one day or more per week. Orientation/training is TBD in September.
Why: Tutoring is a fun and rewarding experience. Volunteers have consistently reported that working with students has boosted their self-confidence and given them an incredible sense of satisfaction in knowing their contributions have positively impacted the academic growth of their tutees.
