1 in 5 adults in Texas can’t read or write well enough to fill out a job application. And less than 5% of these adults have access to educational services to meet their needs. Become part of the Texas Family Literacy AmeriCorps team and learn, develop and contribute by helping people in need to build essential literacy skills. Located in Austin, we offer a range of education-focused national service opportunities that are making a growing difference helping addressing peoples' literacy needs across our region.

All programs are based on research-validated curriculum and are operated with/through our network of 40+ community-based nonprofit partners. Members are matched with local nonprofits and trained to serve in one of the following areas:

1. Teach classes or tutor adults in English as a Second Language

2. Teach or tutor adults in Adult Basic Education, or GED classes.

3. Provide Workforce Literacy and training for adults seeking to improve their employment and careers.

4. Provide early childhood literacy interventions for low-income families.

We are currently recruiting for AmeriCorps members to serve as Adult Basic Education Instructors, as Job Coaches, as English as a Second Language Instructors, and as Early Childhood Instructors to start 8/13/18.

Service with Americorps is an enriching and educational experience that is unlike any other employment opportunity. A term of service consists of serving 1700 hours with one of the Literacy Coalition's community partner agencies by July 31, 2019. During your term, you will be paid a stipend of $13,732 over the course of 11 months. You will also receive free health benefits and many professional development trainings aimed at helping you develop teaching skills and other important skills such as networking and resume writing. Finally, upon successful completion of your 1700 hour term of service, you will receive an education award of over $5,900 that can be used to pay off student loans or to pay for future schooling.

Members will also participate in team meetings, professional development, community service, and team building activities. Members receive a range of training, tools, an education award and great industry connections, as well as practical experience. Members gain important work skills and opportunities for leadership. Service is a great entrance into local non-profit networks as well as an achievable path to real experience and skills to build a meaningful career.

Service Time Line: Members will begin service on August 13th, 2018. The term of service will run through July 12th, 2019.

Qualifications: Bachelors Degree preferred. Spanish preferred, but not required for all positions.

Hours: This is a full time position and members will need to work 40 hours a week to meet the end goal of 1700 hour served. Our AmeriCorps members serve at partner sites in the community, so actual daily schedules can vary dependent upon type of work. For adult teaching, some classes are in the evening.
