Bed-Stuy public school
Volunteer with Behind the Book, a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.
You need no experience or training to volunteer. As a coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects.
This workshop needs your help in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NYC. To sign up, contact firstname.lastname@example.org with the program code and time slot(s). We'll supply the address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:
Date: Friday, May 25th
Time: 9:30 AM – 1:00 PM
Volunteer Role: Field Trip Chaperone
About the program: To explore both Caribbean folklore and using archetypes to tell stories, these 6th- and 7th-graders read The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste, in which a girl must learn local history and use her intuition to save her community from one of these folkloric evil spirits. Field trip chaperones will accompany the class on a visit to the American Folk Art Museum in Manhattan, where they'll guide students doing researching for their stories that apply Caribbean folk elements and other imagined concepts.*You can also sign up to be a writing coach on Monday, May 14th from 11:15 AM – 12:45 PM, to help students polish their recounts of how they resolved a challenging issue in their own lives.
