Description

Brooklyn Boatworks encourages, inspires and empowers young people through the unique craft of wooden boat building. We use traditional wooden boat building as a means to support positive youth development in schools, in the community and on the water.

The volunteer will support our weekly boat building program inside a Queens middle school.  Working with other Brooklyn Boatworks staff, the volunteer will support up to 12 middle school students working as a team to build a small wooden sailboat ("The Optimist"). The volunteer will assist with various wood working and boat building tasks as well as general classroom management.

All construction is done with basic hand tools (hand saws, C-clamps, Gorilla Glue, etc.), so a great deal of skill is not required. While our volunteer positions do not require prior woodworking experience, volunteers must be interested in and capable of learning basic woodworking skills and assisting middle school students in developing and implementing these skills.
