First Step Initiative is a Minnesota-based nonprofit operating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). First Step Initiative’s mission is to empower Congolese women to create a better future for themselves and their families by providing resources to support their business ventures. FSI accomplishes its mission in two ways: by providing cash grants to collectives of women to fund startups and expansions of micro-businesses and by training women in trades and basic business skills and providing support to them in business startups. Our board of directors is a volunteer, working board. As a small nonprofit, we have staff in the Congo but no staff here in Minnesota, so board members have operating responsibilities. Each board member should be prepared to commit 10-20 hours per month to FSI.
