We are looking for board members to join our mission of creating pathways out of poverty in Nepal.

About Sunsar Maya:

Sunsar Maya builds pathways out of poverty by improving the livelihoods of vulnerable children and women through holistic, community-based services. We currently operate two community centers in Nepal, where we provide an after-school program for youth, a women's literacy program, and trainings for rural teachers. 

The organization is looking for (but not limited to) board support in the following areas:

  • Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Fundraising/Development
  • Executive guidance/Board Chair
  • Financial oversight/treasurer

The members of our Board of Directors:

  • Will be volunteers in their service
  • Will share a passion for and commitment to Sunsar Maya’s mission
  • Are willing to roll up their sleeves when necessary to help with the practical work
  • Have strong ties to their communities
  • Are diverse–in age, gender, race, religion, occupation, skills, and background
  • Are willing to support efforts to raise money


Core board member responsibilities:

  • Establish, maintain, and review Sunsar Maya’s vision, mission, and programs
  • Select, supervise, and review the Executive Director
  • Ensure the sound fiscal management of the organization
  • Represent and enhance the organization's image in public


Specifically, we ask board members to:

  • Actively promote Sunsar Maya’s mission, objectives, and fundraising needs to potential funders, volunteers, and the community
  • Prepare for, attend, and actively participate in 75% of board meetings, committee meetings, and special events (by phone or in person), and be available for phone consultation
  • Participate actively in the fundraising programs developed by the board and staff, and explore new avenues for partnership, funding, and stewarding of current and new donors.
  • Participate in two or more of the following:
  • Host at least one fundraising event each year
  • Sharing at least 4 posts/emails per month or writing personal mail appeals
  • Facilitating at least 2 meetings with professional or personal contacts per year
  • Assist in the stewarding of our donors by making thank you calls or sending notes
  • Make a personal financial contribution annually to Sunsar Maya at a level meaningful to you
  • Stay informed about what’s going on in the organization, ask questions, and request information when needed
  • Work in good faith with staff and other board members as partners towards achievement of our goals
  • Follow through on commitments in a timely and responsive manner
  • Agree to serve a two year term unless petitioned by the board and executive director
