Grassroots Community Communications Coordinator
- Volunteer Opportunity posted by Beyond the Surface International
A few hours per week
Long-Term (6 months-1 year)
Beyond the Surface International facilitates surfing, storytelling, and mindfulnessworkshops in remote or marginlized small-scale fishing communities under unprecedented pressure from resource scarcities due to changing climate, collapsing ocean, and shifts in landscapes.
We are looking for a creative and stoked individual to join our team!
The Grassroots Community Communications Coordinator position is ideal for someone who is passionate about bridging the digital divide and engaging remote coastal communities over the worldwide web. As our planet experiences dramatic social and environmental challenges, it is communities living along the coastlines where livelihoods are most affected by climate change and environmental degradation due to rising sea levels, plastic pollution, and overfishing.
These villages face a twofold problem: lack of capacity to have their perspectives heard and barriers to receiving information on potential drivers of and adaptation to change.
We've partnered with an emerging blogging and sharing platform in India that seeks to reach remote communities, previously off-the-grind, to share their stories and also, have access to critical information pertinent to their survival and well-being.
Role & Responsibilities:
- Create simple, straightforward posts on the platform each highlighting a different Coast 2 Coast production or workshop with video content and photos (these will later be translated into local languages).
- Act as a mentor to other authors who are posting (mostly from remote villages) by commenting on their posts, offering feedback, and acknowledging that someone has heard and cares about their story coming out of these marginalized communities.
- Work closely with our Video Content Manager to develop ideas for new videos.
It's a plus if you are currently enrolled in university or you've graduated with a university degree. We require fluency in English with excellent writing skills and it's an added bonus if you can speak another language... particularly, Spanish!
This position requires someone who can work independently and is self-motivated. We require that you work on your own computer from home or remotely.
