Volunteers will support a local community based organization which operates in four slums in Eastern Nairobi, namely Korogocho, Kariobangi, Mathare and Gomongo. Their main objective is to make education accessible to the underprivileged children regardless of their religious, ethnic or racial backgrounds. They also seek to protect the children’s rights, build confidence in them, ensuring that the children grow into responsible adults who will bring positive change in the society. Furthermore the organization empowers the community through various interventions such as providing educational support services, study desks, books and other basic learning materials to students, organizing environmental activities and holding awareness programs on HIV/AIDS in various slum schools.

Volunteer tasks:

• Assisting in teaching English, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Health and Hygiene and creative arts

• Developing HIV/AIDS awareness activities for slum schools

• Mentoring of youths

• Playing with the children

Language: English

Duration of the project: 1 to 12 months

Arrival and orientation: There will be a 3-day orientation seminar for new volunteers including Nairobi city introduction. The orientation starts on the first Monday of every month. It is recommended that volunteers arrive at least one day before the orientation starts.
