Volunteer counselors are key in the fight against gentrification and displacement. To join, email Sara@tenantstogether.org Tenants Together, California's Statewide Organization for Renters' Rights (based in San Francisco), seeks volunteers to become tenants’ rights counselors. Now more than ever, we need volunteer support to fight the federal and state policies that put many communities, especially, LGBTQIA, black and brown, and undocumented folk, at risk of wholesale displacement. And in communities with no rent control or eviction protections that are ruled by big real estate interests, like Stockton and Fresno, the Tenants Together Hotline is often the only service that offers information and support to renters.
We are in great need of Spanish speaking volunteers! We currently only have a few Spanish speaking counselors, and in order to make the hotline bilingually accessible we need more! Please volunteer if you speak Spanish fluently!
As a Tenant Hotline Counselor you will play a key role in defending housing as a human right by supporting those most impacted by the housing crisis to assert their rights and protect their homes and families. Recently counselors have been educating tenants in the City of Richmond about their rights under the new Rent Control laws that were passed on November 8th to protect communities from rent gauging and unjust evictions.
As a Research volunteer, you will help create resources for tenants, analyze existing tenant protections, and assist in other research
As an Organizing volunteer, you will help inform tenants of their right to organize, do door knocking and call banking to tenants, and help in facilitating meetings. 3-6 months organizing experience is required.
And lastly, we also need help with mailings, event planning, and other admin tasks that are more irregular and require less commitment weekly.
The next 2-day Tenants’ Rights Counselor Training is
Mon & Tue October 29th-30th 6-9pm

Volunteers are expected to commit to at least 3 hours per week at the Tenants Together office located at 474 Valencia St, San Francisco. The Hotline operates Monday through Friday, 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Wednesdays 5:30pm-7:30pm and Thursdays 6:00-8:00 pm (we can also consider alternative time slots during the week, please contact Sara to discuss).
You will learn invaluable skills to help your community and become part of the fight for housing justice. We aim to help build an anti-racist, feminist, multiracial, anti-oppressive tenant movement. This means we do not tolerate racism, homophobia, ableism, transphobia, islamophobia, classism, cis-sexism, or sexism. We also hope to continue working to make this event, and our office, as accessible as possible to everyone who is interested in being part of the fight for housing justice.
Accessibility: The building/ office is wheelchair accessible and is 2 city blocks from 16th and Mission BART . We encourage regular breaks. We have a gender inclusive bathroom. We are not currently a scent-free working space. If you have any accessibility concerns, requests or comments please email firstname.lastname@example.org
