The Volunteer Attorney will assist Staff Attorney with asylum applications, while providing trauma-informed care and eventually handle their own case load. Volunteer Attorney must have excellent research and writing skills and a demonstrated commitment to working with survivors of torture and supporting the organization’s mission. Projects may include: preparing asylum applications, finalizing case evidence, conducting legal research and drafting legal arguments, preparing personal evidence, researching country conditions, and developing pro bono partnerships. Positions are available in Washington, DC.

The Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition (TASSC) International is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that provides services to survivors of torture. TASSC recognizes the psychological effects of torture and assists survivors with their immediate medical, legal, housing and employment needs. TASSC’s wraparound services are designed to encourage and supplement the efforts of survivors who come to us seeking independence, self-sufficiency, and healthy futures. Four programs are the cornerstones of our work and address the main areas of concern for many survivors: social, psychological, legal, and advocacy. All members of TASSC are eligible for services that are provided with personalized and purposeful support.

Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in immigration and asylum law. Strong preference will be given to applicants who have taken coursework in immigration law, participated in a law school clinical program and/or have experience interning with immigration nonprofits.

Requirements:

·     Familiarity with immigration law, including some knowledge of affirmative and defensive asylum process.

·     Experience working with survivors of trauma from various cultural backgrounds.

·     Detail oriented and very organized.
