Description

During six weeks of summer vacation, we run an English immersion camp. The camp first ran in 2011 and did not reach its maximum amount of counselors and campers per week, but the goal is to have 10 counselors and 60 campers each week. Spots are already filling up! Camp stations include arts and crafts, songs, active games and sports, stories, chalkboard, and break/snack bar. Campers are ages 5 to 14. Campers are organized by age, with each age group having a fruit name, with some flexibility depending on previous English experience of certain campers. All activities are done in English with minimal necessary explanation in Spanish. Campers learn so much and counselors have a blast and a great experience. Camp runs Monday through Fridays, 8am to 12pm. All counselors are native English speakers.

In the afternoons, volunteers spend time in our grassroots schools leading various activities with students and community members. These afternoon activities depend on the skills and interests of volunteers and should teach new skills to those we serve. Our grassroots schools serve Haitian immigrant youth living in marginalized neighborhoods.

On the weekends, volunteers can do recreational activities or elected additional service work. Volunteers stay in our hostel which is just two blocks from the beach as well as many other attractions around town, such as Central Park, a historic fort, and more. The camp is held in the same building as well.

Volunteers can come for any amount of time, from a few days of helping at the camp or the whole six weeks.
