Mentor Job Description

Big Friends Little Friends, formerly Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Lawrence, matches children with caring adults who serve as role models and friends. Although both “Big” and “Little” tend to benefit from the one-to-one mentoring relationship, by simply spending time together, the volunteers helps to increase their Little’s self-confidence and create a more positive outlook for the future…making a BIG difference! 


Basic “Big” Requirements

  • Use good judgment and discretion at all time
  • Are responsible, stable and nurturing members of society
  • Are interested in being a friend to a young person
  • Are at least 18 years of age
  • Come from different social backgrounds, races and religions
  • Are willing to adhere to all program policies and procedures
  • Are willing to complete the application and screening process
  • Will be dependable and consistent in meeting the time commitments
  • Will communicate regularly with program staff and take constructive feedback regarding mentoring activities

Role of a Big Friend

  • Take the lead in supporting a young person through an ongoing, one-to-one relationship
  • Serve as a positive role model and friend
  • Build the relationship by planning and participating in activities together
  • Strive for mutual respect
  • Build self-esteem and motivation
  • Help set goals and work toward accomplishing them

Time Commitment

  • Make a one year commitment
  • Spend 1 ½ - 2 hours once a week or 3-4 hours every other week with your mentee
  • Communicate via phone, email or text on weeks that face to face visits do not occur
  • Attend an initial 5 hour group training session
  • Attend optional ongoing mentor trainings, mentor/mentee group events, and program recognition events

Application and Screening Process

  • Written application
  • Criminal history check: National Criminal File, CORI, sexual offender registry
  • Motor vehicle records check
  • Personal interview
  • Provide 3 references
  • Attend 5 hour group mentor training
