This position is a one-year national service commitment with AmeriCorps VISTA which provides a monthly stipend and an education/cash award upon completion. This VISTA positions is managed through the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas - the VISTA member with serve at the Katherine Anne Porter School in Wimberley, Texas.


About the Education Coordinator Position:


The Education Coordinator will create and work on maintainence of support systems to the school staff and staff to create academic and employment/pre-employment activities that improve reading and math literary skills, attendance, on-time graduation and acceptance into post-secondary institutions.


About Katherine Anne Porter School:


The Katherine Anne Porter School (KAPS) is an accredited charter high school located in Wimberley, Texas and serving students in Hays, Travis, Blanco, Comal and surrounding counties. KAPS was founded in 1998 to establish unique, diverse and innovative learning opportunities in underserved rural areas. Our school receives exemplary ratings year after year from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) including the highest rating possible in financial integrity and academic achievement. Over 70% of our student population is considered at-risk as defined by the TEA and over half are economically disadvantaged and receive free or reduced cost lunches. The cornerstones of our programs at KAPS include: • A rigorous liberal arts curriculum including science, math, technology, language arts, fine arts, music, social studies and physical education taught with a maximum 1:17 teacher-to-student ratio; • Career-training courses during and after-school including unique subjects such as graphic arts, film, agriculture and interpersonal communications; • Community participation and service to encourage individual responsibility and model citizenship; and • Intensive one-on-one counseling and peer-to-peer mentoring.


About AmeriCorps VISTA Service:


AmeriCorps VISTA members are full-time volunteers at nonprofit agencies partnered with the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas. VISTAs help to improve health services, create and evaluate programs, strengthen community groups, conduct outreach, and much, much more. With passion, commitment, and hard work, VISTA members and their service sites create, implement, expand, and improve programs designed to bring individuals and communities out of poverty.


A VISTA member's commitment to serve includes:

·    1-year term of full-time (40 hours/week) volunteer service at nonprofit agency

·    Bi-weekly living allowance (approximately $1,000/month based by county)

·    Ongoing professional development opportunities

·    Regular mentorship and coaching from a nonprofit professional at your service site

·    Health and prescription drug benefits ( *For details about AmeriCorps VISTA healthcare benefits, please visit https://www.vistacampus.gov/in-service/benefits-service)

·    Eligibility for additional stipends and benefits to assist with relocation expenses and childcare

·    End-of-Service Benefits: Members elect to receive either a cash stipend ($1,800) or the Segal Education Award ($5,920 - applicable to student loans or future tuition) upon fulfillment of their service commitment

The Literacy Coalition of Central Texas is currently recruiting eight AmeriCorps VISTA members to serve in nonprofits throughout Texas to build capacity by developing new programs, conducting outreach, assisting in fundraising and development, and/or managing volunteers.
