Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices allow individuals who have difficulty using speech to share their needs and wants, and participate in making decisions which will affect their life. Volunteers will help children and adults make informed decisions regarding their communication devices by demonstrating AAC systems across partners and environments. These volunteers will have a unique opportunity to share what using an AAC device looks like to individuals both with and without a disability. Volunteers will:

  • Familiarize themselves with and develop skills using various AAC systems and devices
  • Demonstrate what using these AAC devices and systems looks like to individuals

Benefits of Position: Volunteers will learn how to support individuals who communicate differently by modeling using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, a well-known strategy that contributes to community inclusion and communication success. Individuals interested in speech-language pathology, or in working with individuals with disabilities will gain valuable experience and familiarity with AAC devices.

Time Commitment: Volunteers are expected to be able to commit to at least 3 months, for up to 10 hours a week

Qualifications: Volunteers must:

  • Attend a volunteer orientation
  • Successfully complete a background check
  • Possess excellent communication skills
  • Be a self-starter

Support: Volunteers will be provided with support on how to model communication using various communication methods and systems by PROVAIL Clinic Speech-Language Pathologists
