Service Description :

The City of Austin is one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. and it is also becoming an increasingly unaffordable place to live. The City’s Neighborhood Housing and Community Development Office (NHCD) is responsible for working inter-departmentally, inter-organizationally, with partners, and with the community to address Austin’s affordability challenges. Member Duties : The VISTA member will work with the City of Austin’s Neighborhood Housing and Community Development staff to provide outreach and public engagement regarding housing policy objectives directed by the City Council to help mitigate gentrification and tenant displacement. The VISTA member will develop an outreach strategy and conduct outreach with the Community Development Commission, neighborhood groups, and other stakeholders to develop recommendations relating to the areas listed above. Spanish-speaking skills are preferred. 

Benefits: Limited Health Coverage* , Childcare assistance if eligible , Relocation Allowance , Choice of Education Award or End of Service Stipend , Training , Living Allowance .  In return for their service, VISTA members in Austin receive a modest living allowance of $1108/month before taxes and have the option of receiving an AmeriCorps Education Award (just under $6,000) or post-service stipend ($1,500) after completing their service. We also assist our members in the application process for SNAP (Food Stamps) which can provide up to $194 a month for food assistance. Our VISTA members are also able to receive a free annual city bus pass to assist with transportation needs.For more information:
