ROLE CONTEXT

Under the direction of the Executive Director and the Director of the Safe Birthing Programme, the Maternal Health Education Coordinator supports the mission of International Women’s Initiative by developing and implementing an educational curriculum for traditional birth attendants in sub-Saharan Africa. We are seeking passionate nurse, midwives or obstetricians who have a passion for global women’s health and education. We are seeking highly motivated individuals to develop a curriculum for traditional birthing attendants and train them via Skype on labour & delivery, signs & symptoms of obstetric emergencies, and field interventions. This position will be for our Somalia location. This position requires someone who has excellent teaching and communication skills, is self-motivated, reliable, organised, thorough and timely.

 

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

▪      Develops curriculum tailored to meet the needs of traditional birthing attendants delivering direct care in the field in Somalia

▪      Develops educational materials to be distributed at trainings

▪      Deliver educational programme via Skype over 3-day training session, which will be in a Trainer-of-training format. Trainer-of-training staff will then be deployed to the field to educate traditional birthing attendants directly

▪      Deliver education in a practical manner which are sensitive to the realities of the field

▪      Must be sensitive to the limited resources of our populations and provide practical interventions in order to minimise maternal and neonatal risk

▪      Must maintain IWI’s strict code of integrity. Plagiarism in any form will not be tolerated and will place the employee at risk of immediate dismissal

▪      Works collaboratively and actively with teams to ensure a spirit of collegiality, civility, and unity

 

Travel to Somalia is not necessary. Translation services will be provided.

 

REQUIREMENTS

▪      RN-Midwifery or Obstetric teaching experience is mandatory

▪      Field experience is highly preferred

▪      Communication: Must be able to speak and write about educational materials clearly

▪      Critical thinking: Have use of decisive reasoning to determine the best course of action

▪      Minimum Master’s level RN-Midwife or MD in Obstetrics
