Short-Term (few weeks/months)
- We have many other opportunities in Ghana as well as in 25 countries around the world: www.eliabroad.org
In rural areas, especially in Northern Ghana, the doctor to population ratio can be as low as 1 to 59,000. The Ministry of Health working in partnership with the Ghana Health Service, USAID, WHO, and other NGOs has adopted a model of traveling doctors and nurses to provide cost effective health care to the rural population in Ghana. Participants working with a rural health care program will assist either in a small clinic or travel between villages assisting a nurse or doctor. Participants may also help with educational and training programs which could cover topics such as HIV/AIDS, malaria prevention, hygiene, and drinking water safety. Participants will also help care for patients with AIDS and AIDS orphans. This placement requires a lot of flexibility and adaptability as well as good health and an open mind.
Successful health volunteers in Ghana are open to experiencing the health care system in Africa with all the inherent differences from their home countries.
Project Duration: This program can last any length of time from two weeks to six months. The typical duration is 6 to 8 weeks.
The placements are in both rural and urban areas throughout Ghana. Each participant is matched with a placement on an individual basis depending on what he or she is looking for and the needs of the organizations. Participants are provided with breakfast and dinner each day with their host family.
