Description

The Washington Urban Debate League, a branch of the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues, is excited to continue our growth for the 2017-18 academic year. We work to bring the educational benefits of debate (for free) to middle and high school students at publicly funded institutions in Washington D.C. and Prince George's County.

Extensive, peer-reviewed research proves that participation in competitive policy debate improves students in every metric you can imagine--test scores and grades, attendance and graduation rates, college admissions and graduation, as well as giving them the persistence and self-confidence to dream big.

Demand for our program has been overwhelming. We've grown from 120 students from 7 schools in 2015-16 to more than 40 schools and 450+ students in just a year and a half.

This is a great volunteer opportunity for you to make a large impact in a short amount of time.

Volunteers will serve as judges for student debates. The only criteria are a willingness to work with students, to listen to what they have to say, and to take notes on their speeches. We provide a judge training session (held during breakfast) for folks who have never judged or competed in a debate before (no experience necessary). There are also an array of judge training resources on our website:

This program, free for students and publicly funded educational institutions, gives students a competitive outlet to speak and find their voice, as well as discuss and research current events. We'll be using the National Speech and Debate Association topic for the 2017-18 school year, Education Reform.
