Are you ready for a Summer Adventure of Service?

Are you passionate about the need to reduce poverty in our state? Are you courageous and creative? If so, we have a summer opportunity for you!


We have partnered with AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) to offer an 8-week opportunity (June 11 - August 5) for you to bring your passion and perseverance where you can have an impact. You will living and working alongside community members to advance local solutions.


What you’ll do

As a Summer Associate VISTA you will expand our current community level data collection to include parcel level surveys in at least three municipalities. The localized parcel level data will provide a complete picture of the health of the housing market and will help guide both financial and physical investment in each neighborhood. In completing this task, you will:

  • Plan and carry out the parcel survey with NJCC staff and consultants
  • Clean the data, add ownership information and analyze the results
  • Provide the data base and a report with highlights to support ongoing and future abandoned property efforts.

The collection and analysis of community level data has been integral to the continued and growing understanding of the housing markets and needs in New Jersey neighborhoods.


The skills you'll need

We’re looking for people who are motivated and driven to develop their career. To be successful in this role, you’ll:

  • Have a passion for community service and a strong customer service attitude.
  • Have completed some college level coursework in Urban Policy or Planning, Geography, Sociology, Economic Development, or related courses.
  • Have access to a car and the ability to walk two to three miles in a day.
  • Demonstrated facility with data analysis and the ability to write concise reports.
  • Be able to demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft office and use a tablet device.
  • Have good interpersonal communications skills; Spanish is a plus

Compensation

AmeriCorps VISTA provides a living allowance to cover the cost of food, housing, and other basic necessities during your service. Amounts are low because you are expected to live at approximately the same economic level as the people you are serving. The living allowance stipend for this position is $542.22, paid bi-weekly, based on a daily stipend of $38.73. (Federal income tax deductions are withheld from the living allowance. No state, county, or city tax deductions are withheld. However, you are responsible for paying those taxes, as appropriate.)


Use of your personal vehicle will be reimbursed by NJCC based on the 2018 IRS Standard Mileage Rate of 54.5 cents for every mile of business travel driven. Reimbursement for vehicle use will be made semi-monthly.
