Description

Saint Leonard Health and Research Foundation is currently looking for volunteers/interns to join their team in Cameroon to champion activities and undertake various tasks to develop and run the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene project in order to improve the health of women and children in underserved non accessible rural communities in Cameroon Volunteers/interns shall be responsible to educate village communities about the importance of household hygiene, personal hygiene, and sanitation through outreaches. Interns shall have the opportunity to build partnerships with rural women groups, nursery and primary schools, colleges by encouraging children to adopt personal habits of hygiene, and to help their schools and their families adopt small sanitation measures like having VIP toilets, ‘tippy-taps’ outside of latrines. Tippy taps are locally-constructed hand washing stations that make it easy for people to follow good hygiene practices.

To teach about the importance of safe water, interns shall hold village outreaches about the importance of gathering water from clean water sources (even if it means a longer walk to the source), and importance of treating — or at least boiling — water intended for consumption. They shall also educate villagers about the nature and danger of water-borne diseases contracted by drinking contaminated water. Interns/volunteers shall mobilise and bring in local community based organizations (CBOs) to do educational performances or outreaches about safe water and also including health challenges such HIV/AIDs or malaria.

Throughout the project the interns/volunteers shall work in a particularly selected village where saint Leonard Health and Research Foundation has identified WASH to be a major call for concern in terms of morbidity and mortality in children.
