Community Health and Development Fellow at Hospitalito Atitlán

Hospitalito Atitlán is a nonprofit community hospital serving over 75,000 Maya on Lake Atitlán's Southern Shores. The hospital provides a full-range of preventive and clinical health services with an emphasis on women and children and has the only 24/7 emergency and surgical obstetrical care within a two-hour radius.

This position is based out of the Development Office as part of a team that includes individuals with years of experience with Hospitalito Atitlán. The responsibilities are varied and important, and require someone who is flexible, professional, and organized. Below is a list of some of the desired skills and experience, and some of the more established responsibilities for individuals in this position. This list is by no means exhaustive, and is always subject to change as the Hospitalito grows and changes.

Desired Skills:

Skills/knowledge that make a great candidate:

·     Bachelor’s degree or higher in health or science related field

·     Comfort in a hospital setting

·     Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including public speaking skills

·     Ability to multitask

·     (At least) written and oral Spanish proficiency

·     Ability to independently take on and complete projects 

·     Experience in Excel, Word and PowerPoint, MailChimp 

·     Superb critical thinking and writing skills

·     Student mentality/fast learner

·     Adaptability and flexibility, comfort with tasks changing day to day and week to week

·     Enthusiasm 

·     Interest or experience in living in an indigenous community

·     Adaptability with respect to living conditions and situation: while Santiago is a big town (50,000+ people) and many modern conveniences are present, day to day life can become rugged at times and over the course of year this can become taxing. 

Skills/knowledge that would make an outstanding candidate:

·     Advanced/fluent Spanish

·     Interest or experience in health care or public health

·     Grant writing experience

·     More extensive knowledge of Microsoft office programs, Pages, MailChimp, and other programs

·      Fundraising and grant writing experience

*Many of the past volunteers have gone onto to medical school or to earn graduate public health degrees.*

The position is based at Hospitalito Atitlán in Santiago Atitlán. Due to the COVID-19 situation, start dates in country are fleixble—ideally September or October. There is a possibility to begin work remotely. The fellow would be asked to commit to the job through June 2021. For interested applicants already in Guatemala, starting sooner is welcome.

Job Responsibilities:

·     Grants and Reports: Collaborate with the Director of Development and Community Projects team on grant applications for new projects and reports for current projects. In addition to writing, the fellow is largely in charge of data analysis for these reports. 

·     Community Health Programs: Thefellow will assist with the community health programs that are coordinated through the development office, including the diabetes program, Nutrition Project and the “Día de Salud” and “Club de Mujeres Embarazadas” programs, which bring medical staff and supplies into the surrounding communities. Fellow may perform patient-intake at rural clincs, blood glucose screening for diabetic patients or give educational talks about diabetes or nutrition. The fellow will be trained in all these skills before going out into the community.

·     Inbox and Donation Management: The Hospitalito receives emails daily. The fellow is responsible for responding to these emails or forwarding them along to the appropriate party. The fellows also maintain a record of all donations received through Amigos Hospitalito Atitlan (AHA), the Hospitalito’s 501c3 partner in the US.

·     Maternal Infant Program Management: This program links sponsors with pregnant women and new mothers of minimal resources to provide prenatal tests and vitamins, prenatal and postnatal counseling, free clinical visits, the option to give birth in the Hospitalito, and well child visits. HA’s Social Worker manages the program and the fellow is responsible for keeping a record of contributions and for managing communication between the sponsors and families. 

·     Newsletter and Annual Campaigns: Fellow helps edit, curate, and design newsletters that are sent out at least four times a year. 

·     Social Media Management: The fellow is responsible for updating the Hospitalito Facebook page, and may be tasked with photographing events and interviewing staff and community members to get material to publish on social media. 

·     Hospital Tours and Visitors:The fellow conducts tours of the hospital and aids with logistics for groups of visitors. Tours are typically in English, and occasionally in Spanish.

·     Surgical Team Management and Patient Translation:  The Hospitalito hosts a number of surgical teams for brief visits or “jornadas” throughout the year. The fellow assists to the extent that they are needed. HA also occasionally receives foreign patients who do not speak Spanish. The fellow may be called to translate for them.
