Volunteer Assignment: RSVP Personal Advocate Volunteer


Volunteer Eligibility: RSVP volunteers must be 55 years of age or older, live in Multnomah County, willing to serve on a regular basis without compensation, and serve in a defined volunteer RSVP volunteer station at Elders in Action.

Position Duties/Responsibilities:

1.    Willingness and ability to provide one-on-one short term problem-solving assistance and support to older adults (60+ or living with a disability) living independently in Multnomah County who are experiencing problems in a variety of areas including renters’ rights, identity theft, consumer rights, difficulties navigating systems such as Social Security.

2.    Represent Elders in Action with clients, community partner organizations, and in the community.

3.    Willingness to travel in the Multnomah County and conduct themselves in the highest professional manner as defined by the agency’s policies and procedures.

Location of Volunteer Work: Multnomah County

Time/Schedule Requirements: Attend 6.5 hours of initial orientation designed to understand the role of a Personal Advocate volunteer, problem-solving strategies, empowerment model techniques, and how to access resources. In addition, attend some of the 2-hour continuing education meeting that is held each month to provide additional information about other resources. Volunteers are asked to commit to, at least, one year of service for 8-10 hours each month. A background check by Oregon Department of Human Services is required.

3.    Strong listening skills and empathy towards older adults

4.    Good organizational skills

5.    Reliable transportation

6.    Basic computer skills including sending/receiving emails, opening email attachments, performing online searches, and completing forms online.

Training/Support Provided: Elders in Action staff provide initial training and monthly continuing education meetings and all coordination of assigning and information on clients.    


·       Opportunity to network in Multnomah with other aging services agencies and professional organizations

·       Develop knowledge of older adult resources and services in Multnomah County.

·       Volunteer in a professional setting

·       Mileage reimbursement/bus tickets for travel

·       A free supplement insurance policy that cover all registered volunteers while on assignment.

·       Have one-on-one interactions with older adults that result in increased independence and confidence of clients.
