Volunteer with Community Action Partnership of Hennepin County's (CAP-HC) Free Tax Assistance Program and help low-to moderate income individuals and families prepare, file taxes, and gain a better understanding of available tax credits and deductions.

CAP-HC has four different opportunities to help our community members:

The Tax Site Assistant (TSA)

The tax site assistant (TSA) provides support to customers at CAP-HC. Working closely with the tax site coordinator reviewers and preparers, the TSA keeps the multi-step process running smoothly. The TSA plays an integral role to ensure a positive experience for customers.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Initiate the customer sign-in process, ensuring that customers meet the basic eligibility requirements for services • Answer customer questions and act as a navigator through the multi-step process • Assist in the overall operation and flow of the tax clinic • Go over completed tax return with customers and secure necessary signatures • Provide the initial and final “friendly face” for customers

Tax Preparer

The tax preparer works one-on-one with customers to prepare state and federal tax returns. They help customers access important tax benefits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Preparers also serve as a trusted (and free) resource, ensuring customers file correctly.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Prepare state and federal tax returns using TaxSlayer • Complete a thorough tax discussion with the client • Work cooperatively with staff and other volunteers to provide high-quality service to customers • Maintain customer confidentiality, providing as much privacy as logistically possible

Quality Reviewer

All tax returns go through a quality review process. Volunteer reviewers provide thorough on-site checks of all tax returns prepared by volunteers, thus ensuring that every customer receives high quality service.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Review state and federal tax returns completed by volunteer tax preparers using TaxWise • Correct tax errors to ensure accuracy of all returns • Compile completed return packet for customer • Provide support and leadership to other volunteers, answering tax questions as needed • Work cooperatively with staff and other volunteers to deliver high-quality service to customers

Outreach Advisor

The Outreach Advisor will educate tax clients on CAP-HC programs and services. This person will help locate other services and programs the tax clients are eligible to receive.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Educate clients on CAP-HC’s services • Handout forms and help client start intake process • Refer clients to other organizations and services • May use Bridge to Benefits website to find applicable services for clients • Enroll clients in savings programs like “Save your Refund” • Work cooperatively with staff and other volunteers to deliver high-quality service to customers

Training is in December and January, with options of either classroom or on-line training. Training materials are available in November. Volunteering takes place from the last week of January, 2018 through April 16, 2018. CAP-HC prefers each volunteer to work one 4 hour shift per week, but CAP-HC will work with anyone to find the right schedule. Day, evening and Saturday volunteer shifts are available.

Locations: CAP-HC currently operates tax clinics/sites across Hennepin County. With locations in St. Louis Park, Brooklyn Center, Edina, Minnetonka, Minneapolis, Plymouth, and Eden Prairie, volunteers select the dates and tax sites that are most convenient to them.

This program increases our community member’s financial resources giving them a chance to save and improve their lives.

Volunteers are the cornerstone of this program and we cannot provide it without you!
