POSITION SUMMARY: Members will provide direct service to clients of the American Red Cross through completion of projects that enhance organizational service delivery and expand community resources while developing their professional skill base. The member will empower individuals and communities through the use of Preparedness education, specifically the Home Fire Campaign and the Pillowcase Project, with a focus on underserved communities and special needs populations. Members must have all clearances before serving Vulnerable Populations. This AmeriCorps service description was developed for AmeriCorps service, not staff or volunteers. AmeriCorps members do not replace staff.


Bi-weekly stipend ($580.00 biweekly)

Ø High School Diploma or its equivalent required

Ø Computer skills- Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)

Ø Ability to lift 40 lbs.

Ø Ability to withstand extreme weather conditions

Ø Works well in a team setting as well as independently

Ø Ability to communicate verbally and in writing

Ø Ability to work objectively and compassionately with diverse individuals and communities

Ø Must be comfortable with public speaking

Ø Willing to take required Red Cross training courses

Ø Members may not participate in any activities included in the Prohibited Activities as listed in the ‘Partner Site and Member Agreements’

Ø Members must have all clearances before serving vulnerable populations  

COMMUNITY NEED: Red Cross volunteers, staff, and AmeriCorps members work to deliver vital services- from providing relief and support to those in crisis, to helping the community be prepared to respond to emergencies. 


Essential Functions of the Position/SPECIFIC DUTIES

Ø Provide Community Disaster Education (CDE) presentations in communities throughout the region

Ø Work closely with the Regional Pillowcase Project Manager and Pillowcase Project Volunteers to provide Emergency preparedness/Home Fire Safety information to 5,000 elementary school students throughout the region

Ø Participate in Home Fire Preparedness Campaign events that provide high risk communities throughout the region with free smoke alarms and fire safety information

Ø Join a local Disaster Action Team (DAT) to provide immediate assistance to households affected by disasters

Ø Provide casework and recovery services to disaster clients

Ø Assist with recruitment and training of new disaster volunteers

Ø Attend Corps Team meetings;

Ø Complete AmeriCorps monthly service and outcome reports;

Ø Complete weekly time logs in timely fashion;

Ø Complete weekly journals;

Ø Develop, plan and participate in various AmeriCorps events such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, AmeriCorps Week activities and other service projects;

Ø Participate in host site and AmeriCorps trainings as scheduled.
