Time Commitment

Full time (30+ hrs/wk)

Calle Mayta Capac 1325
Rio Seco, El Porvenir

SKIP is a charity working with disadvantaged families in an impoverished district of the city of Trujillo, Peru. Our holistic programme focuses on the educational, economic, emotional and social development of each child and family. Our aim is to foster the capacity of children and families to be the principal agents of change in their own lives.

There are over 200 children between the ages of four and eighteen years old currently enrolled in the education programme, which makes it the largest department in SKIP. We aim to maintain an exciting, stimulating and engaging learning environment. Our aim is not to replace the local education system, but rather supplement it. Following a curriculum designed especially for the children at SKIP, we provide classes in subjects such as reading comprehension, Math and Computing.

The Library Programme:

Our Library functions as a library, drop-in centre, homework club and short-term child-care. What makes it so special is that it is voluntary. Kids turn up as and when they want to. It can be the difference between being at home alone looking after even younger siblings or having a safe fun place to do homework, read and engage in educational play. It is a place where our working parents know their children will be safe and supported every afternoon. It offers child-cares support for mothers who attend our educational or skills workshops at SKIP. The library is open to the 200+ primary and secondary children who access SKIP. Every day we see kids build their confidence in reading and writing and maths and it is incredibly rewarding.

The Library Leader will work with the English/Library Coordinator and is responsible for training and supervising the library volunteers, providing feedback, motivating the team, and working on long term projects for the library. These projects can include improving the physical environment of the library, promoting literacy through reading challenges, creating games and activities for the volunteers to use in library, etc.

This volunteer will also work in other areas of the project including either primary or secondary education, economic development, or volunteer coordination.

The minimum requirement for this position is 4 months. At that time commitment the monthly contribution fees apply and this would be the only leadership role.

The preferred commitment is 9 months in which case the role would be combined with Volunteer leader and the contribution fees would be waived.
