Who are we?

We're Do a Barrel Roll (http://www.doabarrelroll.ca), a Canadian registered non-profit using the power of gaming of all types, from video to tabletop, to drive positive change in the lives of individuals and communities. We focus on themes of inclusion, acceptance, belonging, friendship, community, and healthy living.

What are we doing?

Do a Barrel Roll is working to challenge endemic narratives about gaming. We think of gaming in the broadest possible sense: video; arcade; table top; mobile; AR/VR; LARPing; escape rooms; and, plenty of other categories. In particular, we are interested in stories that showcase how gaming has been a means by which gamers have found a sense of belonging, acceptance, inclusion, friendship or developed a community.

As we grow, we want Do a Barrel Roll to become a knowledge hub for information on gaming worldwide, particularly those that are often left out of the conversation regarding global trends in gaming and esports.

And as our Volunteer e-Sports Researcher, we are looking for your help to change this!

What are you going to do with us?

As a Do a Barrel Roll e-Sports researcher, you and your co-authors would be working to research, draft and ultimately publish through our organisation a high-level report on the state of gaming in select countries and regions of the world. In particular, these reports, which themselves are part of our mandate to develop essential resources that challenge our misconceptions about gaming, would focus on countries, peoples, and places often neglected in conversations on gaming and esports.

In this role, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Working with Do a Barrel Roll's Executive Director and Director of Program Development to finalize a list of core research questions and table of contents for your report;
  • Conducting in-depth research for your selected region, with deep consideration for accuracy and consistency of information;
  • Contacting and conducting interviews with key informants as required for the report;
  • Drafting the research report, to a length and specification jointly determined with the Do a Barrel Roll executive;
  • Editing and submitting report on time;
  • Verifying, as required, statements and facts;

Who you are:

You should be an excellent writer, researcher, and editor, with demonstrable experience.

You must be a self-starter - excited and eager to work independently.

You should have a good ability to source and contact interviewees.

You should be able to draft interview questions based on a participant’s profile.

You should know how to use multiple types of resources for research and you should be able to do so effectively.
