Be the Positive Change in Cleveland as an Adult Literacy Tutor
- Volunteer Opportunity posted by Seeds of Literacy
A few hours per week
Long-Term (6 months-1 year)
3104 West 25th Street
Got a soft spot for sentence composition? Love long division or adore algebra? How about sharing your everyday reading, writing, and math skills with a dedicated adult learner in your community?
Seeds of Literacy, an award-winning nonprofit organization that provides free GED prep and basic ed to adults in the Cleveland area, has an urgent need for people just like you to volunteer as adult literacy tutors. The shocking truth is that an estimated 66% of adults in Cleveland are functionally illiterate, and may struggle with everyday necessities like reading a bus schedule and understanding medication labels.
This is where you can make a very real difference! Tutors work one-to-one with students to improve reading, writing, and math skills, offer encouragement and support, and help students develop positive attitudes towards learning.
We ask that tutors can commit to attending one class session per week for one year (it’s okay to miss weeks for travel, etc.). Classes are two hours long, and we offer a flexible class schedule with sessions scheduled throughout the day to accommodate personal preference and availability.
We have two locations to serve our community: Seeds West 3104 W. 25th Street, 3rd Floor (corner of W. 25th & Clark Avenue) Cleveland, OH 44109 Seeds East 13815 Kinsman Road (corner of Kinsman & E. 139th) Cleveland, OH 44120
Both locations have free, secure parking and are on major bus lines. One training is all it takes to get started!
You don’t have to be a educator to help, we’ll train you.
Upcoming Tutor Trainings Are:
- Saturday, November 3, 2018 (at Seeds West) 9am - 3pm
- Saturday, January 26, 2019 (at Seeds East) 9am -3pm
- Saturday, March 2, 2019 (at Seeds West) 9am - 3pm

Where you attend training doesn’t affect where you tutor; you can volunteer at whichever location you prefer. If you're ready to make a difference by changing one life at a time, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Sharon Farrer at 216.661.7950 firstname.lastname@example.org.
