Volunteer with Behind the Book, a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.

You need no experience or training to volunteer. As a writing, research or art coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work in the classroom.

This classroom workshop needs your help in Washington Heights. To sign up, contact with the program code. We'll supply the address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:

Program 3288AK-M

Date: Wednesday, May 9th

Time: 8:00 - 9:45 AM

Volunteer Role: Research Coach

About the workshop: Kanye West: Music Industry Influencer, by Alicia Klepeis, was the model for eighth-graders to develop biographies of popular musical artists they’ve chosen. Using resources such as articles, video interviews, and lyrics, each student will work with a coach to research the artist’s life and work. They’ll also design album cover art to represent the subjects of their biographies.

For dates of other Behind the Book workshops around New York City, please visit our volunteer opportunities page.
