Description

We are seeking passionate mentors, who are committed to fostering a safe, supportive environment for young people to become civic leaders.. Mentors assist in the implementation of the curriculum; including planning/participating in community service activities and advocacy efforts. Most importantly mentors are expected to be positive role models to the youth. This position is not paid, however a transportation stipend may be offered. Mentors are expected to attend required trainings and work 3-6 hours per week (3:15p-6:00p)


Responsibilities

  • Assist Lead Instructor in the execution of lesson plan;
  • Assist in the planning of Community Service activities;
  • Participate in social justice advocacy efforts;
  • Facilitate smaller group activities and discussion;
  • Assist youth with homework;
  • Maintain consistent and direct interaction with youth;
  • Be a source of emotional support for youth and record/report any signs of emotional/mental distraught to appropriate staff;
  • Mentor youth, act as a positive role model through actions and words.


Qualifications:

  • Experience working with youth;
  • Interest in Social Justice, Community Organizing, Education, Social Work;
  • Sensitivity to people of diverse educational, ethnic, and economic backgrounds;
  • Interest/Background in Social work, Education or Public Policy preferred;
  • All volunteers MUST secure DCPS clearances
