Maya Traditions Foundation is located on the beautiful Lake Atitlan in Panajachel, Guatemala. As a Fair Trade social enterprise, we work to celebrate and preserve the art of backstrap weaving by connecting skilled indigenous artisan weavers with international markets. We produce high-end wholesale products that are sold directly to retailers and offer private label design services.  


We are currently seeking a passionate and experienced knowledgeable person with a passion for textiles, to work side by side with our Production Manager and Sales Manager to catalog, store and digitalize our textiles collections. 


Responsibilities

  • Design the storage space
  • Develop the most suitable storage system for our textiles, considering the available resources
  • Catalog and manage the textile storage and archive
  • Compile and prepare written information about the cataloged textiles for internal use or public online publication
  • Research and record the origins and historical significance of symbols and colors
  • Research potential founders and support the development of grants
  • Train staff on the textile preservation and catalog


Requirements

  • Degree in Library Science, Textile Conservation or Collection Care and related fields of study  or currently studying towards one
  • Familiar with Heritage Manager software or similar ones
  • Aptitude for working hands-on with delicate materials
  • Long-term planning and creative problem-solving skills
  • Comprehensive understanding of textile structures and techniques
  • Interest in textile history and indigenous cultural studies
  • At least a basic understanding of organic chemistry
  • Clear, descriptive writing skills
  • Patience, concentration, and curiosity
  • Comfortable living with basic necessities 
  • Laptop computer for work 
  • Intermediate Spanish is required.

  • Comfortable communicating and working with all levels of management 
  • Calm under pressure 
  • Understands the importance and best practices of time management
  • Able to self manage, set goals,  create objectives, and present the final product within the “due date”
  • Open to taking direction and working independently with minimal guidance
