Our mission here at Capital Caring is simple: To IMPROVE CARE for those facing a life-limiting illness through direct support of patients and their families, public education, and public advocacy. Through our hospice, palliative care, and end-of-life counseling services, our wonderful doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, home health aids, and volunteers are able to support nearly 1,200 patients and their families on a daily basis throughout the Virginia, DC, and Prince George's county region. We are a service that cares for anyone and everyone, regardless of age or ability to pay, and we operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. At this time, the Volunteer Department is seeking a caring and compassionate individual who can participate in one of our weekly Programs that supports our patients that receive care from their homes - the Tuck-In Program. Every Thursday, each of our Tuck-In volunteers call 20-30 patients to make sure they have everything they need for the upcoming weekend, to gather information regarding changes or symptoms that have occurred for the patient over the last week, to ask the caregiver if they need any additional support, and to be an active listener who can provide a lending ear for both the patient and their family if needed. The premise for this program is to instill confidence in the patient and their family that they can make it through the upcoming weekend with the supplies and medications they have, and with the support they are receiving from our staff - essentially "tucking -in" the patient for the weekend. Tuck-In calls start every Thursday at 4:00pm, with patient care needs submitted to the Volunteer Coordinator no later than 5:30pm. For most volunteers, they are finished with their call list in about an hour! I cannot tell you how many families have expressed their gratitude for someone calling to check up on them before each weekend - to make sure that they are resting comfortably and to verify that they feel confident to get through the upcoming weekend. It is truly an amazing program to become a part of.
