Interfaith Committee for Detained Immigrants (ICDI) is a faith-based, welcoming and inclusive LGBTQ-affirming organization where all faiths are welcome. Our mission is to accompany men and women through detention, deportation, and post-detention. We currently have six programs, all aimed at safeguarding the dignity of the detained immigrant and his or her family.

Post-Detention Accompaniment Network (PDAN) assists individuals who are being released from detention. We respond to the diverse needs of individuals released from immigration detention as well as families who come to visit loved ones for court dates. PDAN maintains a hotline from 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday. There are five teams – one team is on call each week of the month. Each team provides emergency transportation and accompaniment to individuals immediately after being released from ICE (Immigration Customs Enforcement) custody.

For those released with family elsewhere in the United States, we provide post-detention support packs as well as a train/bus ticket to return to family while they await a future court date.

We are looking for volunteers to join one of our teams!

The Volunteer is responsible for meeting the individual being released from detention downtown Chicago and assisting them in returning to their family in the U.S. The volunteer will transport the individual to the train station, bus stop, etc. and provide the individual with a post-detention support pack and train/bus ticket. You can choose which day(s) during your “on-call” week once a month you would like to volunteer. We ask that volunteers commit to at least one day per month, more if possible. Do you have access to a car? Do you help people feel at ease? Are you responsible? If you answered yes to these questions, this might be the volunteer opportunity for you!

*ICDI reimburses volunteers for all approved expenses incurred during the accompaniment including: mileage, train/bus ticket, etc.
