Do you want to help public school students in East Harlem become published authors? Provide middle school students with individualized daily writing and literacy support, and help teachers execute engaging writing projects covering a variety of subjects, themes, and styles.
The East Harlem Writers' Room provides over 300 students in MS 7 and Global Tech Prep every year with ongoing writing and publishing projects with the support of a permanent 826NYC staff member and regular volunteers. Volunteers select shifts on a project-by-project basis during the school day and help students become published authors!
826NYC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around our belief that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. With this in mind we provide after-school tutoring, field trips, workshops, and temporary and ongoing in-schools writing-based programming. All of our free programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in their individual voice.
