The following position is a one year (November 2017-November 2018) AmeriCorps VISTA position at The Baltimore Station in Baltimore City and sponsored by Strong City Baltimore.

Promote healthy living by developing a nutrition education program for residents in The Baltimore Station! The goal of the project is to educate, empower, and expose the residents of the Baltimore Station to fresh, non-processed nutritional options as well as healthy eating habits that will address the many health issues that our residents face.

The VISTA will:

1.Create a nutrition education program including establishing and implementing nutrition guidelines

2. Recruit members and coordinate the Nutrition and Community Garden Committees

3. Coordinate the creation of The Baltimore Station Community Garden

4. Develop partnerships to secure local, fresh produce to enhance resident meals

The Baltimore Station is a nonprofit organization, founded in 1989, starting with 40 residential beds, that provides rigorous self-help programs to men, primarily veterans, in Baltimore City who are transitioning from the cycle of poverty, substance abuse and homelessness to self-sufficiency. Today, The Baltimore Station has 140 residential beds shared between 2 treatment facilities and transitional housing. The current average length of stay is 13 months. This longer timeframe allows the residents to learn and practice new skills and behaviors as part of addressing substance abuse challenges. The length of time that residents stay at The Baltimore Station is key to the success of the residents once they leave the program. Services are provided within a residential, therapeutic community and include counseling, group therapy and referrals to educational, employment training and other opportunities. This VISTA project would address the nutritional needs of the residents of The Baltimore Station. Often times while individuals are dealing with addiction, principles of nutrition are forgotten.

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is not a job per se, but a full time national service opportunity. Benefits include: living allowance, relocation and child care assistance if eligible, health allowance, monthly travel reimbursement, choice of an education award or cash stipend, and non-competitive eligibility for federal employment upon completion. Preferred candidates will be at least 18 years of age, demonstrate relevant experience for the position, and exhibit professionalism, commitment to service, and leadership potential.

Strong City’s mission is to build and strengthen neighborhoods and people. For more than four decades, Strong City has secured the resources of VISTA members to build sustainable change and fight poverty in our neighborhoods. Strong City-sponsored AmeriCorps VISTA members receive a solid foundation of skills they can use as a springboard for careers in government, nonprofits, education, and much more.
