Are you a queer and/or trans adult interested in providing free mental health peer support to our community in Madison and across Wisconsin? Are you interested in committing to a small team to sustain the group within a minimal time commitment?

The Queer Mental Wellness Peer Support Group is a Madison-based, free, open, peer support group for queer, trans, and/or questioning adults to come together to give and receive support around mental wellness, mental health, and mental illness. All experiences are welcome, including those that carry more stigma than others, such as addiction and schizophrenia.

The group is also community-based, meaning that not only is everyone involved part of the queer community, but also that the group was designed from feedback from the community and will continually be shaped by it. All facilitators are volunteers, and in the spirit of peer support, each one identifies as LGBTQIA2S+ and as having personal experience dealing with mental wellness, health, or illness.

For the duration of the pandemic, we are holding meetings via Zoom and extending beyond Madison to invite anyone in our community across Wisconsin to attend our meetings.

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate support group meetings approximately once every other month, 3-4:30pm Sundays
  • Follow policies and procedures outlined in our Facilitator Guide
  • Send email announcements and reminders to attendees during the week prior to the meeting you facilitate
  • Weigh in on organizational decisions via email as desired
  • Attend Quarterly Facilitator Meetings on how the group is going and ways to improve it as desired
  • Assist with other aspects of sustaining and improving the support group as desired

Qualifications:

  • Must live in Wisconsin and be 18 years of age or older
  • Preferred peer support, counseling, or other mental health service provision experience
  • Must identify as LGBT+ and as having lived experience with mental health, mental wellness, or mental illness
  • Able to communicate with other facilitators and problem-solve any issues or concerns that arise while participating in the support group
  • Open to improving facilitation skills if needed
  • Reliable and able to commit to the meetings you sign up to facilitate
