Tutor Adults in English as a Second Language
- Volunteer Opportunity posted by Literacy Council of Chelan & Douglas Counties
A few hours per week
Short-Term (few weeks/months)
508 S Chelan Ave
We serve students who want to learn English as a second language or learn to read and write for the first time as adults. Our students want to improve the quality of life for themselves and their families, and are learning English as part of accomplishing that goal.
We match up volunteer tutors with students who need to learn English. Classes are small, between one and six students, and are free to students.
Volunteers attend an 8-hour training. Afterwards, they have access to a library of teaching resources and guidance as needed. Training dates for 2018-19 include:
September 15th, to teach October 1st-January 31st
October 20th, to teach November 1st-March 15th
December 8th, to teach January 2nd-April 30th
January 19th, to teach February 4th-May 30th
May 18th, to teach June 1st-September 26th
Classes are twice per week, 1.5 hours per class. We match up students and tutors according to availability, which makes it possible to volunteer at many times of the day. Classes take place either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday at 9 AM, 11 AM, 1 PM, 3 PM, 5:30 PM, or 6 PM.
Most volunteer tutors spend three hours per week teaching, and one to two hours per week preparing for class.
The minimum commitment from both volunteers and students is 45 hours of class time, which can be accomplished in the four-month session. You are welcome to keep on tutoring longer than that!
Classes take place at the Wenatchee Community Center, in surrounding communities, and at a few student workplaces in the fruit industry.
