Since 1985 Freedom from Torture has been the only UK human rights organization dedicated to treating and supporting torture survivors who seek refuge in the UK. We do this primarily through psychological therapies but also services which document torture forensically, practical legal and welfare support and creative groups.
Thanks to the dedication of our staff and volunteers – as well as thousands of passionate supporters and funders – thousands of torture survivors have been able to rebuild their lives in incredibly difficult circumstances.
The purpose of the role is to work within the holistic rehabilitation model of Freedom from Torture and provide welfare advice and advocacy to survivors of torture living in the North West of England. This will be as part of a multi-disciplinary team and requires an individual with significant experience of working as a welfare adviser and advocate in relation to welfare benefits, housing and the asylum support system.
We are seeking to recruit 2 days a week Welfare Advisor to join our dynamic team within welfare service. The successful applicant will undertake on-going casework with clients with complex welfare needs and carry a client caseload. The successful applicant will also need to keep records and provide letters and brief reports as appropriate.
It is important that the successful applicant has experience in welfare rights and a working knowledge of legislation affecting asylum seekers and refugees e.g. asylum, housing, benefits. It is also desirable to have awareness of the needs of asylum seekers and understanding of good practice in relation to child protection.
