Youth and Young Adult Supports are not hosts but are paired with COR participants to offer supportive mentorship, and to provide mental and emotional support. Mentorship may also involve assisting with budgeting and money management, building independent living skills, and other personal goals and action plans.  The YAS can provide support and problem-solving assistance, including referrals to other services and professionals who may be better equipped to help in the circumstances.

For hosted youth, the YAS will partner with the Host Home Liaison and will arrange a home visit once every six weeks [no more than 4 visits] with host family and participant. The purpose of the check-ins will be to review the signed agreement and change as needed, to identify needs and ways to meet/respond to those needs and continue to ensure the relationship is functioning for all involved. The YAS may also be called on to mediate conversations between the host home and the youth.

For youth who are not yet hosted, the YAS will help troubleshoot with them regarding their current living situation. The YAS will be involved in the matching process between participants and potential host homes.

Additional responsibilities may also include transportation, meals, tutoring, and other assistance, as the COR participant needs and as the YAS is available.

This person is a volunteer with Choosing Our Roots and will have: a signed Community Investor Consent to Serve, a signed Code of Conduct, will have completed the COR Volunteer Skill Share in full. Volunteers working directly with youth under the age of 18 or vulnerable adults will be required to have a background check completed. More information about those background checks as well as individual rights of people being fingerprinted are included in the volunteer and host home applications.
