Ghana Health and Education Initiative (GHEI) is recruiting for a part-time Program Development Fellow to join our remote Global Support Team of volunteers who support our in-country staff based in Humjibre, Ghana. The role requires creativity, analytical thinking and strategizing skills, a willingness to give, learn and leave an impact at a high-impact, grassroots, international development organization. Duration & Start Date: 12 months (June 1, 2020-May 31, 2021). Time commitment estimated at 15 hours per week.

Location: The Fellow will work remotely with the opportunity to visit GHEI’s field operations in Humjibre, Ghana at a later stage of the fellowship.

Job Summary: The Program Development Fellow position entails enhancing our development systems and advancing our fundraising goals. The fellow will work both independently and together with organizational leadership to set development priorities and plan and execute fundraising initiatives aligned with broader GHEI strategies. These efforts include cultivating the current and prospective donor base, grant proposal writing, managing fundraising campaigns and development of donor management systems.

Reports To: This position reports to GHEI’s Executive Director who will oversee professional development progress and accomplishment of deliverables. The Fellow will work closely with GHEI’s program teams in country, as well as the Communications Officer.

Responsibilities:

Grant Writing

·      Identify potential grant opportunities and coordinate with the Global Support Team and GHEI staff on strategies for grant proposals

·      Prepare letters of intent and other promotional material for communication with current and prospective donors

·      Manage proposal writing process and coordinate editing/reviewing process

·      Lead a part of GHEI’s grant research and writing process

Partner Stewardship and Donor Experience

·      Create communications tools required for partner engagement and impact reporting

·      Steward donor partnerships to ensure impact, engagement and partner retention

·      Understand business needs and growth plans and act/prioritize accordingly

·      Suggest new ways of attracting prospective donors

Development Administration, Research and Analysis

·      Enhance systems for donor prospecting, solicitation and stewardship, including management and execution of donor gratitude strategy

·      Research potential donors to underwrite GHEI programming and develop strategies for donor outreach

Intercultural Team Work

·      Collaborate with different stakeholders and staff in Ghana and globally

Qualifications:

·      Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; or in final-year of undergraduate program. Career-changers and graduate students also encouraged to apply!

·      Interest in nonprofit management and fundraising

·      Experience with program design and technical and/or creative writing

·      An understanding of the use of social media to organize people around a cause

·      Passionate about empowering others and curious about development work in Africa

Competencies

·      Ability to work independently and as part of a multicultural team with stakeholders in Ghana and globally

·      Ability to process, summarize and present large written text while maintaining attention to detail

·      Ability to work alone, with minimal supervision, while ensuring high-quality work and end products.

·      Resilience, patience, flexibility, and flexibility around performing a wide variety of tasks as they arise

·      Commitment to building local capacity and working within established local systems, structures, and cultural norms

·      Commitment to the highest professional standards, ethics, and values

·      Time management skills and ability to set and meet deadlines

·      Strong research, writing, review and editing skills

·      Creativity and willingness to take initiative

Desirable Qualifications

·      Experience in Salesforce, HubSpot a plus!

·      Willingness to share your story of participation in the fellowship over social media

Compensation – Please read carefully!

This is an unpaid fellowship but can be used for academic credit. If the Fellow travels to Ghana, the Fellow will receive: free housing on-site (for up to 1 month) and reimbursement initial transport from Accra to Humjibre (and back).

Currently, GHEI puts nearly all of our funds into supporting our mission of providing necessary health and education programs for villages in Ghana. Unfortunately, we cannot cover the cost of international travel, visas, and health insurance. Upon completion of the contract, GHEI is prepared to assist with letters of recommendation and helping with job placement, using our considerable network of NGOs both in the United States and in Africa.
