The Cayenne Wellness Center and Children's Foundation is the umbrella organization of the Machao Orphanage foundation, and dedicated to improving the health of communities, with a focus on advocating for individuals with sickle cell disease. We hold support groups, educate, engage, and work towards finding a cure for sickle cell disease with organizations across California. Last year, we held the 9th Annual Sickle Cell Disease Educational Seminar in Fresno, and it was one of our largest and most successful seminars yet. This year we are looking to expand our reach and continue engaging the community in order to spread awareness about sickle cell disease, and that’s where you come in.

We are seeking a volunteer who is interested in community organizing or volunteer coordination in the nonprofit sector. Cayenne Wellness sends volunteers to canvas in local malls in March, June, and August. What is canvassing? Canvassing is handing out informational papers and flyers, but also answering questions about sickle cell disease and the challenges the sickle cell community faces. It is the chance to educate, engage, and act as the face of a community that is frequently overlooked. Under the supervision and with the support of the Program Manager, you would recruit, train, and lead the volunteers out to the canvassing location.

Volunteer Lead Role and Description:

  • Create visually compelling, clear, volunteer opportunity postings
  • Follow up with and track interested volunteers
  • Create, track, and follow the canvassing schedule for the 2018 year
  • Write up content for volunteers to learn about how to engage with the public effectively
  • Train volunteers over the phone about what to say and how to answer questions
  • Attend weekend canvassing events in March, June, and August

From you

  • Interest in nonprofit work, community organizing, or social justice issues
  • Background in communication, nonprofit management, or human resources
  • Professionalism, in your verbal and written communication
  • Have a valid driver’s license and vehicle
  • Ability to dedicate 1 - 2 hours a week during slow times, and 10 hours a week in the three weeks prior to canvassing events
