Description

Thank you for interest in gleaning with Food for Others at Hollin Farms on Sunday, July 29 from 11:30am-2pm. Please read through the FAQ and contact Grace at gplihal@foodforothers.org or 703-207-9173 if you have any questions! Please keep in mind that start and end times are not set in stone, and may change as the date gets closer.

What is gleaning?

Gleaning is the act of recovering excess or unwanted produce from local farms.

How does it work?

On gleaning day, drive to Hollin Farms, 1436 Snowden Road

Delaplane, VA 20144. A staff member or lead glean volunteer will meet you at the entrance and give you further instructions.

After you finish picking the produce, you’ll load the bins into your car and drive them to the Food for Others warehouse.

How do I find out about gleaning events?

Text GLEAN to 844-83 to get gleaning updates, or check signup.com to see more postings. Please check back periodically for gleaning updates.

How do I know if the glean is cancelled?

Cancellation can occur due to bad weather, lack of excess crops, or other conditions; it is in nature’s hands! PLEASE email gplihal@foodforothers.org on the morning of your scheduled glean and listen to the recorded message. If it does not mention cancellation, the harvest will go on as scheduled.

Can kids participate in gleanings?

Yes! We love kids to learn where their food comes from and to help others who are in need. There is no minimum age, but we require close parental supervision for young children as well as waiver forms signed by parents/guardians for those under 18.

What do I wear? What do I need to bring?

Most people wear shorts or lightweight pants, a T-shirt, and old sneakers. Keep in mind that you will get sweaty and dirty! Bring garden gloves, sunscreen, bug spray, a hat to shade your face, and lots of water.

What else do I need to know?

No smoking is allowed in the fields. When planning your day, keep in mind that you’ll be responsible for delivering the produce you gleaned to food for others.
