The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is one of America’s leading historic, cultural and educational institutions. The Museum is centered on the aircraft carrier Intrepid, a National Historic Landmark, and is home to the space shuttle Enterprise, more than two dozen authentically restored aircraft and the submarine Growler. Its mission is to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth.

Our volunteers play a key role in helping the Museum achieve its mission. Working with the public or behind the scenes, volunteers share their experience of service, their interest in American history, or their insight into the science and technology of aviation, naval ships and space exploration.


Position Title: Exploreum Facilitator

Department: Education

General Summary:

The Intrepid Museum is seeking volunteers to facilitate learning and fun in The Exploreum, Intrepid’s interactive hall. Additionally, Facilitators will be responsible for replenishing supplies at exhibits, monitoring and reporting any damage and ensuring that guests are using the exhibits in a safe and productive way. This position requires excellent customer service, energy and strong presentation and communication skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Engaging with guests in the Exploreum.
  • Familiarize oneself with the interactive exhibits in The Exploreum and related spaces and/or objects they are connected to in the Museum Complex.
  • Offering assistance with interactive Exhibits to enhance the Museum experience for our guests.
  • Being the face of the Museum by assist guests in way-finding and answering questions.
  • Tracking and addressing guest issues, questions, and concerns.
  • Attend scheduled training sessions and assigned floor times.
  • General upkeep of Exploreum Exhibits (replacing parts that have been moved, replenishing supplies, cleaning as needed and condition reports.)

Special Skills Required:

  • Must be 18 years old to volunteer for this position.
  • Interest in informal education and passion for history and science.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to try new things.
  • Punctuality and dependability.
  • Able to work well with learners of all ages.
  • Able to accept direct supervision.


Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Must be physically able to be active for up to 3 to 4 hours. While performing the duties of this job, the volunteer is regularly required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The volunteer frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The volunteer is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The volunteer must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Schedule Requirements:

Volunteers commit to a minimum 4 hour shift, twice a month.

Available hours:

Mon-Fri: 11:00am – 3:00pm

Sat-Sun: 11:00am – 3:00pm
