The Library and Homework Help Volunteer

Our Library functions as a not only a library but also a drop-in centre, a homework club and a short-term child-care facility. For children who choose to attend, it can be the difference between being at home alone looking after even younger siblings or having a safe fun place to do homework, read and engage in educational play. It is a place where our working parents know their children will be safe and supported every afternoon. It offers child-care support for mothers who attend our educational or skills workshops at SKIP. The library is open to the 300+ primary and secondary children who access SKIP. We develop more targeted support for a number of children who attend the library regularly. We see kids build their confidence in reading, writing and maths every day, making the effort incredibly rewarding. Click here to read more about programmes in SKIP

Under supervision of the Library Coordinator, and following a basic curriculum, run three hour drop-in library sessions with at least one other volunteer. Tasks include engaging children in reading/literacy, planning fun activities and exercises to support learning of maths operations, supporting children with their homework, adding to library resources, developing specific learning support plans for children who regularly attend the Library, contributing to the creation of a space that is safe, welcoming, peaceful, educational and fun.

The volunteer would spend 50% of their time working in the Library and Homework Help program and would have available time to work in other aspects of the project.
